MM2H Sarawak: how S-MM2H differs from the federal scheme

MM2H Sarawak, called S-MM2H, is not the federal programme under another name. Sarawak runs its own scheme through its own ministry, with its own deposit, its own agents and its own application office. The federal tier numbers on the rest of this site do not apply to it.

We read the Sarawak ministry announcement and the S-MM2H FAQ page on the date shown. They do not agree with each other on the deposit and the minimum age, so this page shows both and tells you what to ask, rather than choosing one.

MM2H Sarawak requirements 2026

The Sarawak ministry announced new rules on 31 October 2024 to start on 1 January the next year. The announcement does not print the year, so the 2025 start is our reading of its date. The FAQ page we read still shows the older rules. Here are the two side by side.

Ministry announcement, 31 Oct 2024S-MM2H FAQ page
Fixed depositRM500,000 for each application, including spouse and dependantsRM150,000 for an individual, RM300,000 for a couple

Both pages are Sarawak sources. They were read on the same day and give different numbers.

How Sarawak differs from the federal scheme

The federal scheme has Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers, a fixed deposit in US dollars and a pass term of five, fifteen or twenty years. Sarawak has none of those tiers in what we read. It asks for a deposit in ringgit, held in a Sarawak bank, and it asks you to spend time in Sarawak, not just in Malaysia.

The FAQ page says the pass is ten years in total, with an initial maximum of five. The Malay Mail report says five years, renewable for another five. Those two agree.

The FAQ page also lists a real estate route that asks for property of at least RM600,000, and says property and other liquid assets are not accepted as proof of funds. We found nothing on the announcement about whether the property route still applies.

MM2H Sarawak agent

The FAQ page says you may apply directly or through a licensed agent. A direct applicant needs a Sarawakian sponsor who lives in Sarawak, so without one you need a licensed agent. The application is made in person at the ministry office, or through a registered agent, and online or postal submissions are not accepted.

The October 2024 announcement set new rules for the agents themselves: a Sarawak-owned company with no foreign directors and paid-up capital of RM100,000, and existing agents had to reapply. The ministry said agent shareholders may not hold shares in another licensed S-MM2H agent.

The federal register on our MM2H agent list page covers companies licensed by the federal ministry. We did not find a Sarawak licence list in what we read, so ask any Sarawak agent for their S-MM2H licence and check it with the Sarawak ministry.

What it costs and how long it takes

The announcement gives a one-off processing fee of RM5,000, paid to the state ministry. The FAQ page we read printed no application fee, so the two do not conflict here, but only one of them mentions it.

The FAQ page says processing takes 90 working days, and checks by other authorities may extend that. An agent will charge on top of the ministry fee. We found no Sarawak fee cap, so get the amount and what it covers in writing.

Common questions

›Is MM2H Sarawak the same as MM2H?

No. Sarawak runs its own scheme, S-MM2H, through the Sarawak ministry. It has its own deposit, agents and application office, and the federal tier numbers do not apply to it.

›How much is the Sarawak MM2H deposit?

The ministry announcement says RM500,000 for each application, including spouse and dependants, from the start of 2025. The FAQ page still prints RM150,000 for an individual and RM300,000 for a couple. Ask the ministry or your agent which applies to you, in writing.

›Can I apply for Sarawak MM2H without an agent?

The FAQ page says you can, if you have a Sarawakian sponsor who lives in Sarawak. Without a sponsor you need a licensed agent.

›How long must I stay in Sarawak each year?

30 days a year, to renew or extend the pass, according to both the report of the announcement and the FAQ page.
