MM2H silver tier: requirements and cost

The MM2H silver tier has the lowest fixed deposit of the three main tiers, and a shorter pass than Gold or Platinum. It suits someone who wants the programme with the smallest amount locked away, and who is comfortable renewing sooner.

Everything below is from the ministry Silver page, cross-checked against the ministry overview table. Where Silver differs from Gold or Platinum, the numbers sit side by side at the end.

MM2H silver tier requirements

These are the Silver requirements as the ministry prints them.

After you are approved, the main applicant and every dependant must have a medical check-up at a clinic or hospital the ministry appoints. When you renew, the Silver page asks for a copy of a valid passport, your latest medical report and health insurance.

MM2H benefits

The Silver page lists what the pass gives you and your family.

  • Children can study up to university level at government-recognised institutions in Malaysia, and can use the MM2H pass or be given a student pass automatically.
  • Long-term medical treatment is allowed in Malaysia.
  • There is a tax exemption on foreign funds and income, such as the profit on the fixed deposit.
  • You can bring a spouse, children under 21, unemployed and single children aged 21 to 34, disabled children of any age, and parents or parents-in-law.
  • If the main applicant dies, the pass can pass to the next of kin among the registered dependants.

MM2H silver cost

In ministry fees, a Silver couple pays RM8,500: the RM1,000 participating fee, plus processing fees of RM5,000 and RM2,500. The overview lists a Silver renewal fee of RM1,500, and the guidelines add a fixed pass fee of RM500 per year and a visa fee of RM0 to RM50, depending on the participant's nationality. They do not say how these fit together, so ask which applies to you.

The larger amounts are the USD 150,000 fixed deposit, from which you may withdraw up to half after approval, and the home worth at least RM600,000. An agent charges on top of this, and the ministry pages we read print no agent fee.

What Silver does not allow

The Silver page lists business and investment activities as not allowed, and career opportunities as not allowed. An MM2H pass is a residence pass, not a work pass. If you plan to work or run a business in Malaysia, you need a different permit, and this site does not cover those.

Silver, Gold or Platinum?

The tiers differ mainly in how much you lock away, the minimum home price, and the length of the pass.

Common questions

›How long is the MM2H silver pass?

5 years, renewable. The ministry says validity also depends on your passport, so a passport that expires first means you renew the pass early.

›Can I work in Malaysia on a Silver pass?

The Silver page lists career opportunities and business or investment activities as not allowed.

›Does a Silver couple pay one participating fee or two?

One. The participating fee is charged per main applicant, and the ministry says there is none for dependants. Each dependant does pay the RM2,500 processing fee.

›How much of the Silver fixed deposit can I take out?

Up to half of the principal, after you are approved, for buying a home, education, medical care and tourism in Malaysia.
